Startup to deliver energy storage by truck, rail, barge

on June 6, 2016

The-Salt-Lake-TribuneEnergy Storage News – Getting extra power to where it’s needed is a tricky business, often requiring millions of dollars in investments.

Now a solar-industry veteran has proposed a cheaper alternative: juice stored in batteries that are delivered by truck, rail or barge.

Shihab Kuran, who founded Petra Systems Inc. and also worked at NRG Energy Inc. and SunEdison Inc., has now formed Power Edison, which offers grid-scale lithium-ion battery systems encased in specialized shipping containers that can be stacked like Legos.

New concept turns battery technology upside-down

on June 6, 2016

energy harvesting journalEnergy Storage News – A new approach to the design of a liquid battery, using a passive, gravity-fed arrangement similar to an old-fashioned hourglass, could offer great advantages due to the system’s low cost and the simplicity of its design and operation, says a team of MIT researchers who have made a demonstration version of the new battery.

Government ‘should invest in energy storage to fully integrate renewables’

on June 3, 2016

Energy Live NewsGovernment subsidies should be used to encourage investment in energy storage to fully integrate renewables in the sector.

That’s according to a study by the University of East Anglia (UEA), which insists investment in power storage is vital for renewables to achieve their full potential.

The study focused on two types of storage systems – pumped hydro storage and compressed air energy storage.

The true cost of energy storage

on June 2, 2016

Power TechnologyEnergy Storage News – Numerous reports claim that, if the world is going to transition to a low-carbon economy to meet internationally set global warming targets, large-scale energy storage technology will be essential due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy resources.

However, low-cost power storage capabilities still evade the energy industry and, at present, there appears to be little appetite to invest in this disruptive technology.

3 Energy Storage Technologies to Keep an Eye On

on June 1, 2016

motley foolEnergy Storage News – Renewable energy is now one of the lowest-cost sources of electric energy in the world, winning billions of dollars in open bids to provide energy to the grid. But as the renewable sector grows, utilities have to deal with the intermittent nature of its energy production, both on a minute-by-minute basis as well as through seasonal changes. And energy storage will likely play a key role in that adaptation.

Studies reveal booming interest for storage products

on June 1, 2016

pv-magazineEnergy Storage News – A study by German-based EuPD Research published last week demonstrated that even though nearly half of the Australian solar installers offer storage products, most of the batteries they sell are commercial rather than residential. Moreover, the survey showed that solar energy prosumers mostly buy storage products in combination with a new solar system.

Investment In Energy Storage Vital For Renewable Energy Success

on June 1, 2016

cleantechnicaA new report has concluded that investment in energy storage technology is vital for the success of renewable energy and its full integration into the energy sector.

According to a new study published by researchers from the University of East Anglia (UAE), government subsidies should be used so as to encourage further investment in energy storage, without which the authors of the report believe renewable energy will struggle to be fully integrated into the energy sector. The inherent variable nature of leading renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar requires energy storage so as to compensate for times when the wind may not be blowing, or the sun may not be shining. Energy storage systems such as reversed hydro power plants, large scale compressed air systems, and battery storage, are quickly being seen to be a vital companion to most, if not all, renewable energy technology installations.
