Texas Grid Plans Jump In 2016 Solar & Wind Capacity

on March 28, 2016

Additions this year to the ERCOT grid in Texas are expected to be dominated by ⅔ from wind and solar PV, according to energy research from SNL. If SNL research proves true, this will be a huge boost to the generation of renewable electricity within this historic oil-producing state.

As Christian Roselund has written for pv magazine, “This is the beginning of a boom anticipated in Texas over the next 15 years.”

In spite of its abundant sunshine and massive open spaces, Texas has long trailed in the US solar market, a trend now changing, ElectricityPolicy concludes:

Germany’s Second-Biggest Utility Plans to Launch a Residential Solar-Plus-Storage Offering

on March 15, 2016

greentech media

Germany’s second-largest energy company, E.ON, is planning to launch a residential PV-plus-storage offering for the German market in April, the company has confirmed. The product will be based on Solarwatt’s MyReserve battery systems, which went on sale last year.

“We will collect feedback from the market and from customers, and then fine-tune the product,” said E.ON’s vice president of battery systems, Eliano Russo. “The final launch will be in September.”

DOE picks winners in Round 1 of USD-20m clean energy support scheme

on March 14, 2016

SeeNews-Renewables

March 11 (SeeNews) – The US Department of Energy (DOE) has picked 33 small businesses, including entities focused on solar, wind and wave power, to work directly with DOE national labs on the development of clean energy projects.

The particular businesses were chosen as part of Round 1 of the new Small Business Vouchers (SBV) pilot. They will receive nearly USD 6.7 million (EUR 6m) in vouchers that can be used to perform collaborative research or access lab equipment or facilities, so they can move their innovative ideas and technologies closer to the marketplace, the DOE said in a press release on Thursday.

The investment under the first round of the USD-20-million SBV programme will be made by the department’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The vouchers that are being awarded range from USD 50,000 to USD 300,000.

Cumulative global installed PV to reach 310 GW by end of 2016

on March 14, 2016

Renewable-Energy-Focus

By the end of 2016, cumulative global installed photovoltaic (PV) installations will surpass 310 gigawatts (GW), compared to just 40 GW at the end of 2010, according to IHS.

Five countries account for 70% of this capacity; China, the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy. With annual installations stalling, IHS claims that Germany will fall from the second-largest installed base for PV to the fourth largest, surpassed by the United States and Japan.

“A continued stagnation of major European PV markets due to weaker financial incentives has caused PV additions in Europe to slow dramatically in recent years, but global demand remains strong,” said Josefin Berg, senior analyst of solar demand for IHS Technology. “The supply chain continues to benefit from a period of relatively stable pricing, and there could be a new wave of capacity expansions.”

Vivint cancels $2 billion deal with struggling SunEdison

on March 12, 2016

FuelFix

Financially strapped SunEdison saw its $2.2 billion acquisition of Vivint Solar rooftop solar company abruptly canceled Tuesday by Vivint.

Vivint cited an alleged “willful breach of the merger agreement” by SunEdison as the reason for pulling out of the deal. The acquisition was widely criticized for months by investors who have bemoaned how leveraged SunEdison is with debt after making too many acquisitions.

SunEdison quickly grew into the world’s largest renewable energy developer and is building a handful of solar and wind farms in West Texas and the Panhandle. The company is headquartered in Missouri with an operational base near San Francisco.

Prospects for Wind, Solar, Storage, DR Dominate Talk at ERCOT Market Summit

on March 12, 2016

RTO-Insider

AUSTIN, Texas — Energy storage, demand response and solar have a place alongside wind in the Texas market, speakers at Infocast’s ERCOT Market Summit said last week.

PTC Reductions will Challenge Wind

Susan Williams Sloan, the American Wind Energy Association’s vice president for state policy, said the extension of the wind production tax credit provides “five years of certainty. It’s what we have been looking for to compete in this industry, which requires so much capital.”

Matthew Burt, senior vice president for Renewable Energy Systems, said the gradual reduction of the PTC will be a challenge to the wind industry. Over “the next few years … we have to get the prices down,” he said. “The wind itself is free, but the equipment is very expensive.”

National Grid to Launch a First-of-Its-Kind Solar Marketplace

on March 11, 2016

greentech media

This spring, National Grid will launch a new online marketplace that allows customers in Rhode Island to shop for solar and receive an incentive for improving energy efficiency at the same time.

SolarWise Rhode Island is part of National Grid’s 2016 Rhode Island Renewable Energy Growth Program, which launched last year. The initiative will help the state meet its goal to increase the amount of electricity generated by customer-owned equipment by 160 megawatts over a five-year period.

National Grid is partnering with EnergySage to deliver the SolarWise program. Through EnergySage’s online marketplace, customers will be able to compare solar options for their home or business and receive competitive quotes from preapproved installers. National Grid is the first electric utility company in the nation to offer a transparent platform for the purchase of distributed solar.

US Solar Market Sets New Record, Installing 7.3GW of Solar PV in 2015

on March 10, 2016

greentech media

In yet another record-breaking year, the solar industry in the United States installed 7,286 megawatts of solar PV in 2015. GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association announced the historic figures today ahead of the March 9 release of the U.S. Solar Market Insight report.

For the first time ever, solar beat out natural-gas capacity additions, with solar supplying 29.5 percent of all new electric generating capacity in the U.S. in 2015. Led by California, North Carolina, Nevada, Massachusetts and New York, the U.S. solar market experienced a year-over-year growth rate of 17 percent. Geographically, the market continues to diversify with 13 states installing more than 100 megawatts each in 2015.

States that made major solar strides include Utah, which jumped in the rankings from 23rd to 7th place, and Georgia, which moved from 16th to 8th in the nation.

E.ON Leads The Way To Germany’s Green Grid

on March 8, 2016

cleantechnicaOriginally published on the ECOreport. No other utility company has more installed renewable capacity or uses a stronger proportion of renewably produced electricity. According to recent press releases, the utility giant E.ON leads the way to Germany’s Green Grid.“Renewables account for more than 80 percent of the electricity that flows through our networks, well above the national average. This demonstrates that E.ON already operates the innovative, efficient energy networks of the future. Each year we invest more than €1 billion to expand our networks in Germany,” said Thomas König, Managing Director of E.ON Deutschland.32 GW of the 96 GW of installed renewables capacity subsidized under Germany’s Renewable Energy Law were connected to E.ON by the end of 2015.
